Wheelchair Friendly House Renovation - Wallingford, Oxfordshire

This is a project we completed last month and it's been one of our most satisfying. Mr John Jenkins MBE is a wheelchair user who was honoured for his extensive work for other wheelchair users. He contacted Innovation after searching the Internet for a suitable company to carry out a number of renovations to make his new property in Wallingford wheelchair friendly.

The renovations needed to make his home accessible for him, but as many of his friends and his wife Janine are able bodied it needed to be suitable for them too.

John gave us a call way back in March 2015 and we got talking about his requirements from his new home which he was waiting to move into at that point. We set up a meeting to discuss in more detail his plans and with our advice we came up with the best possible ways of getting the most from his new home.

When our team started work we removed the old heating system and put a modern condensing combi-boiler up in the loft space, allowing us to remove the airing cupboard (which was in the main bathroom) giving us much more space to create a large wet room. We also moved the toilet over a little to give better acces all around it, and did the same with the basin. We fully retiled the wet area with large porcelain tiles and fitted Altro anti-slip flooring throughout the room.

We fitted modern new sanitaryware and a lovely chrome mixer shower with numerous grab rails to help when manouvering in the wet area. As we removed the airing cupboard we built some shelving to put towels on, with a small radiator below to keep both the room and the towels warm. We had LED strip lights fitted below each shelf giving a lovely effect, and we also fitted a stylish chrome towel rail next to basin.

Another big requirement for John and Janine was to utilise the size of the house more effectively, as initially there was one long corridor with access to each room off that corridor. To address this, we studded up two of the three doorways and plastered over them. We then took down two internal walls and installed steel beams above the openings to support the weight. All of these changes now provide one large room (a new bedroom) with an ensuite wet room at the end. We then set about fitting some ultra-modern and stylisgh Eclisse pocket doors to give a greater opening for wheelchair use.

We also fitted the latest specification of fuse board, plenty of new lights and dimmers, heating controls, some reading lights mounted in the walls, and the main corridor was completely replastered ready for decoration.

We then started work on the guest bathroom where again we took down a wall and built a new stud wall making the bathroom big enough to accommodate their new bath tub and making the new room a lovely size. Again we fitted Altro anti-slip flooring throughout, replaced all sanitaryware and put in some stylish ceramic wall tiles and a lovely chrome towel rail. We fitted new doors to match the existing one in the house and with a lick of paint the room was complete.

Our team thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Jenkins' and look forward to hopefully working with them again in the future.

And here's what they had to say about Innovation:

"We had 3 months of planning our move to Wallingford and, as we knew significant changes would have to be made to make our new property wheelchair friendly, we contacted Innovation at a very early stage.  We were impressed by the company’s positive communications when we first asked for their help to make the bathrooms fit for purpose, one as a wet room and the other a family bathroom.  And sure enough, when the big day came and we moved in, Innovation were good to their word and we were able to crack on quickly with the vital modifications that would enable me to live there.  Whilst we had a firm quote from Innovation for the work, we all knew that we would need to get a lot of work done that was not determinable at the outset, so we had a ‘trusting relationship’ allowing flexibility on both sides, of both work to be carried out and the associated costs.

Innovation did a great job for us – their workmanship was excellent and most importantly for me, they were very easy to work with – flexible, cheerful as well as hardworking.  Our bathroom conversions have been completed on time and are the subject of a great deal of admiration from family members.  All the associated work – bedroom modifications, passageway, and central heating system – are first class.

We would like to thank Innovation for all their hard work and helping us to turn our new home into something very special." - John Jenkins MBE
